But, if opening the borders strains the welfare state to the breaking point, as the closed borders folks keep predicting, then letting the immigrants effectively force the government into reforming or shutting down the welfare state would be a win-win, wouldn't it? Private charity can (and should!) be revived to deal with indigent citizens and legal residents, no?
