I think a better version of the thrive-survive theory would have to incorporate the social libertarian-authoritarian axis in addition to the economic left-right axis. If we interpret the theory as saying that authright is the political organization needed by societies that are struggling to survive, and libleft is the social organization best for abundant and peaceful environments, then the theory has more historical accuracy and explanatory power.
